Indiana is divided into several area codes that cater to different regions of the state. Northern Indiana is served by area codes 219, 574, and 260, with 219 being one of the original area codes that covered the entire northern part until 2002. Central Indiana, excluding the Indianapolis Metro area, is under area code 765, while the Indianapolis Metro itself is covered by 317 and 463. Southern Indiana has retained the 812 area code since its inception and was overlaid with 930 in 2014. Due to population growth and the proliferation of mobile devices, these area codes have undergone changes over the years to accommodate the increasing demand for phone numbers. The state has taken measures to ensure that number exhaustion is addressed, with projections suggesting that the northern area codes will last beyond 2040 and 765 until around 2030.
Indiana has followed the national trend of increased mobile phone usage. Data from 2023 shows that 78.8% of adults in Indiana rely solely on mobile phones, up from 66.9% in 2019—a gain of nearly 12 percentage points in four years. Indiana adults who primarily use a wireless phone make up 10.1%, while 4.2% rely on both mobile and landline. Those who mainly rely on landlines and those who only use landlines have declined to 3.7% and 2.0% respectively. The share of adults lacking phone access stands at 1.2%. Indiana's dual-user segment has dropped sharply since 2019, reflecting a strong preference for exclusive mobile use.
