Area code 808 is the designated telephone area code for the Hawaiian Islands, which includes both the windward and leeward islands. This code also extends its services to Wake Island in the western Pacific Ocean. The area code was established on August 8, 1957, this was a full two years prior to Hawaii achieving statehood. Currently, Hawaii has a population slightly over 1.4 million, and despite its rapid growth and the surge in mobile numbers, especially on the Oahu island (which houses Honolulu), it is anticipated that a single area code will suffice for the state until at least 2033.
It's worth noting that before October 2021, the 808 area code had numbers assigned for the central office code 988. However, in 2020, 988 was nationally recognized as a three-digit dialing code for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. This posed a challenge for Hawaii's exchanges, which all allowed seven-digit dialing. As a result, the 808 area code transitioned to ten-digit dialing on October 24, 2021.
Hawaii's island geography drives mobile reliance. Data from 2023 shows that 68.7% of adults in Hawaii rely exclusively on mobile, up from 52.9% in 2019—a surge of nearly 16 percentage points in four years. Hawaii residents who primarily use a wireless phone make up 20.4%, while 5.2% use both mobile and landline. Adults who mainly rely on landlines and those who depend solely on landlines have declined to 2.2% and 2.7% respectively. Adults without telephone service account for 0.8%. Hawaii's dispersed population and limited landline infrastructure have accelerated the shift to mobile, with those who use both services dropping sharply from 16.0% in 2019 to 5.2% in 2023.
